Some bands define—and perhaps manifest—a generation of local-music-loving, die-hard, no-bullshit kids. Just kids. With a love for VFW, library, backyard, small-venue shows. No pyrotechnics. No flashy groupies (sometimes). No barriers keeping fans from performers. No big, bright lights. Well, I take that back. There were Lights. They were Lights.
Lights’ legendary presence in the Massachusetts rock scene can be traced back to just a squirt after the new millennium, where their weekly shows were the reason we loved local music and—to some extent—the reason we started playing in bands ourselves. The long-awaited, all-encompassing, 33-track disc of everything Lights is finally here. Something in the Sky is the end result of all those shows that made you think, “This is what it means to grow up. This is something I’ll look back on and smile about. This is my Generation. This is Lights.”
